green gilbert
n
British
a thick piece of mucus from the nose. A schoolchildren's term which has been in use since the 1950s and is now con-sidered respectable enough to be said on television. The choice of Gilbert is due to the supposed inherent comicality of the name and to its echoes of gobbet, glutinous, etc.
